apple_a9_socAccording to the rumors and based on Apple’s history, there is a good chance that this year’s iPhone 6s and 6s Plus could feature the A9 SoC. This is due to Apple’s previous releases which saw the release of the A8 for last year’s iPhone, and the A7 from two years ago. Unless Apple decides to switch things up this year, the A9 would be a safe bet.

That being said, a recent tweet by Steve Hemmerstoffer (also known as @OnLeaks) has revealed photos showing off the alleged SoCo, which you can see in the photo above. It’s not the best quality photo but the A9 wording can clearly be seen. Then again we suppose it wouldn’t take much to photoshop that image, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

So far what we know about the rumored A9 processor is that it could be built on the 16nm process instead of the 20nm process used for the A8 last year. For the layman this probably doesn’t mean much, but ultimately it should allow the processor to be even faster than before due to the reduced distance between transistors.

This means that despite the A9 rumored to be a dual-core processor, versus the quad- and octa-core processors found in Android phones, it will still be powerful enough to get the job done. We expect that Apple will share the details on the 9th of September so do check back with us then to find out more.
