Samsung today officially announced the processor that’s going to power its next flagship handset. There have been rumors that the Exynos 8 Octa 8890 will power the Galaxy S7 and that’s precisely the processor that Samsung has confirmed today. It’s the company’s second premium application processor that’s built on the 14nm FinFET technology, the 64 bit chip features four custom Samsung cores and four ARM Cortex-A53 cores based on the 64 bit ARMv8 architecture.

The Exynos 8 Octa 8890 is a bit different than the Exynos 7 Octa 7420 since it’s an integrated one-chip solution that houses the application processor and LTE modem on a single chip.

This is the first application processor from the company to tout its premium custom CPU cores based on the 64 bit ARMv8 architecture, Samsung promises 30 percent improvement in performance and 10 percent improvement in power efficiency compared to the Exynos 7 Octa. Exynos 8 Octa 8890 also packs plenty of graphics processing power, it’s aided by the ARM Mali-T880 processor to ensure that the entire setup doesn’t buckle under highly immersive 3D gaming and virtual reality experiences.

It also features the LTE Rel.12 Cat.12/13 modem with theoretical download and upload speeds reaching 600Mbps and 150Mbps respectively, making the device much more suitable for streaming high resolution video content on the go. Since it’s a one-chip solution all of this is packaged neatly thus freeing up more space inside the device and allowing more flexible design options.

Samsung will begin mass production of the Exynos 8 Octa 8890 later this year, the Galaxy S7 is most likely going to be the first consumer device powered by this processor, and it’s expected to arrive in February 2016.
