There are several subway stations in New York City that offer Wi-Fi connectivity but it can be a chore to remember which ones do and which ones don’t. By the end of this year, you wouldn’t need to remember them as State governor Andrew Cuomo has promised that the entire subway system of New York City will offer Wi-Fi connectivity in 2016.
So by the end of 2016 people on the way will get some kind of access to the internet, complete cellular service is expected to arrive a little later after that, the aim is to provide end-to-end access by early next year.
This is welcome news for people who regularly use the subway in New York City, that’s like millions of people on a daily basis, the company that’s handling the service is called Transit Wireless and it had said previously that the target was to provide full Wi-Fi service by the end of 2017.
Governor Cuomo has also approved a contactless payment system which will allow riders to either use their smartphone to pay the fare or use newer bank card, instead of having to juggle tickets or a MetroCard. This feature isn’t expected to arrive by 2018 though one can hope that when it does it has support for popular mobile payment platforms like Apple Pay and Android Pay.
