It is nice to own a piece of hardware that comes with its fair share of software updates from time to time, where such updates end up prolonging the life of said hardware for obvious reasons. Well, the Microsoft Band 2 might not have the kind of following like the Apple Watch or one of those Android Wear powered smartwatches, but this does not mean that it has been neglected in terms of updates. In fact, the latest Band 2 update has a little bit of something for hikers.

Upon installation of the latest update, users will be able to enjoy an Explore mode which will specifically target hikers. The Explore Tile is not the only change though, as there has been some other additions to the Microsoft Health social leaderboards, in addition to a spanking new Windows 10 Microsoft Health app.

Back to the Explore Tile – Band 2 users are now equipped with a set of tools that have been specially tailored for their needs whenever they walk, be it through the town, at a park, or even roughing it out over rugged terrain. How does it work? It will make use of the Band 2’s GPS receiver when it comes to route tracking, saving a record of your hike which can be referred to later, being smart enough to know when you’re taking a breather and to resume tracking when you are ready to continue. This tracking mode is augmented with weather warnings, hydration and nutrition reminders, and UV monitoring, now how about that? [Press Release]
