An Xbox Live Gamertag is like a username that you choose when joining a social network. While some networks allow you to change your username once you’ve joined, there are some that don’t, and in that case you have to create a new account. Users also have to get creative when the username they want is already taken and sometimes the person who holds the username may not even use it. If the Gamertag you’ve always wanted has been taken you might want to check if it becomes available tomorrow.

Microsoft’s Larry Hryb, a.k.a Major Nelson has confirmed that around one million Gamertags will be “re-released” starting tomorrow. This means that abandoned Gamertags that haven’t been used in quite a while will be freed up so that other people can get them.

The only caveat here is that these re-released Gamertags will only be available to those who have “at least 1 year of cumulative” subscription to Xbox Live Gold. These Gamertags will be released in a 24-hour period allowing users in different time zones to get the tag that they’ve wanted for so long.

The re-released Gamertags will include proper names, types of food, pop culture references, geography and travel, science and technology, math and numbers, animals and some of the greatest inventions of all time.

These Gamertags will be available starting tomorrow on Xbox One, Xbox.com as well as the Xbox app on Windows 10.
