Google_Expeditions1Some of you guys might recall that last year Google launched Expeditions. Basically this provided students with the opportunity to go on virtual reality field trips to places they might not normally have the chance to do so, like overseas countries and places that might be hard to access. Unfortunately at that time, it was limited to who could access it.

However Google has since announced that they will be opening up Expeditions to everyone, meaning that even if you aren’t a student, you will be able to check it out for yourself as long as you have the app and a VR headset like the Google Cardboard or the Samsung Gear VR. It is only Android for now but an iOS version is expected to be released as well in the near future.

According to Google, “Since we launched the Expeditions Pioneer Program last September, more than a million students from 11 countries have taken one of our 200+ virtual reality trips—from the Great Barrier Reef, to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. Today, we’re making Expeditions available to everyone.”

As for educators who wish to take advantage of this, Google has pointed out that Best Buy will be selling Expedition kits. Basically these contain several viewers and the necessary hardware needed to power its use in the classroom.
