lg-g5_hands-on_23Wireless charging tech has typically been viewed as novel. This is because while it does not require users to plug their phones in, it does require that they place it on a wireless charging mat, in which picking it up to receive a call or send a message basically interrupts the charging process, which we guess doesn’t really feel very much like wireless charging.

However according to a report from Business Korea (via BGR), it seems that LG is working on a smartphone that will support magnetic resonance charging. What does this mean? This means that the phone will rely on magnetic waves to charge it, and that the radius of the waves will be several inches versus millimeters in current wireless charging technology.

This means that users will be able to move their phones away from the charging base and still keep the charging process active. The report claims that the range that LG has managed to achieve is around 7cm and will be capable of charging devices at 7 watts. No word on when this phone will be released, but apparently it should be announced in the next few months.

That being said, long range wireless charging technology has been around and has been explored before. However so far none of them have been commercialized, so if LG is successful, they could possibly be the first to market, but until then take it with a grain of salt.
