evolve 1mOne of the ways developers make money from their games would be to sell the game itself. This has been the traditional way, at least until the recent years where we started to see a rise in in-app purchases and microtransactions as viable revenue alternatives. The idea is that you create a game that’s free and charge players for certain in-game perks or cosmetics.

Turtle Rock Studios decided to adopt that model after Evolve Stage 2 did not perform as well as they had hoped. A report from last week revealed that this was actually a great idea because according to the stats on Steam, it quickly rose to become the 11th most-played game, but it seems that those numbers pale in comparison to what we have learnt recently.

The official Twitter account for Evolve has since announced that they have managed to gain 1 million new PC gamers ever since they decided to make the game free-to-play. Yes, you read that right, 1 million new PC gamers, meaning that this isn’t 1 million in total that the game has right now, but an additional 1 million players to whatever their base was before.

This is a very impressive number and it looks like the developers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that going free-to-play was the right move. Of course whether or not the game will be able to generate profit remains to be seen as players may simply want to check it out and give up after a few days without purchasing anything, but so far it looks like they’re on the right track.
