evolve-3gbSeveral days ago we reported that the folks at Turtle Rock Studios decided that in order to “save” their game Evolve, they will be moving it to a free-to-play model. Was this a good decision? It might be a bit too soon to tell, but early numbers have indeed confirmed that it was a pretty damn good decision.

According to the stats, it seems that prior to this, Evolve’s player base had actually dipped to a mere 157 players on a daily basis, which obviously is very shocking considering that the game was actually off to a good start at its launch. However according to the recent numbers from Steam, it shows that there are over 40,000 players playing the game, with a peak of 40,445.

This has resulted in Evolve being the 11th most-played game on Steam in the past couple of days. While this is no doubt great news for Turtle Rock Studios, the main question is whether the developers will be able to maintain its growth. Free-to-play has eliminated the barrier to entry in terms of cost, but after that the onus is pretty much on the developer to ensure that the game is compelling enough to keep gamers around.

Either way it’s still too early to tell, but so far it looks like the game is on the right track, and if Turtle Rock Studios can address the problems and criticisms that gamers had before, this could very well save the franchise for the studio.
