As you might have heard, Tesla has recently made the headlines but not necessarily for the best reasons. This is because it seems that a driver and owner of a Tesla car had died following a fatal accident while using the car’s autopilot feature. You would think that because of this, Tesla would want to reconsider the feature.
However it seems that if anything, the company actually plans on keeping it around and are actually planning on doubling their efforts on educating customers on its use. Prior to this, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk had extolled the virtues of the autopilot feature by claiming that the feature actually reduces the chances of an accident.
We’ve also seen videos in which autopilot has allowed drivers to narrowly escape accidents like oncoming collisions, so we guess obviously there are some merits to this claim. At the same time Tesla has stressed that autopilot is not a self-driving feature, meaning that drivers shouldn’t turn it on and sit back and expect the car to do everything for them.
In a way it is like a more advanced version of cruise control with automatic braking and steering. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Musk was quoted as saying, “A lot of people don’t understand what it is and how you turn it on,” but what do you guys think? Following this accident should Tesla at least temporarily disable the feature and go back to the drawing board to figure out how to improve it further?
