Twitter Continues Its Crackdown Of Terrorism-Related Accounts

twitter_logoSocial media is a place where people from all backgrounds can gather, meaning that more often than not it will also attract people with bad intentions, such as a terrorists who might use social media as a way of promoting radical thoughts or recruitment. On Twitter’s end, the company has been actively taking down such accounts.

Earlier this year the company managed to suspend about 125,000 terrorism-related accounts, but it seems that they aren’t quite done yet. According to a report from Reuters, Twitter has continued with their crackdown of such accounts and has since suspended an additional 235,000 accounts, meaning that they have managed to suspend about 360,000 terrorism-related accounts to date.

According to the company, they claim that the number of terrorism-linked accounts that they are shutting down on a daily basis have increased by 80% since last year, and that their response time has been greatly reduced, meaning that they are more efficient than ever, although right now it kind of feels like a whack-a-mole situation.

The company says that this is because they largely rely on user reports to identify these accounts, along with spam-fighting tools that helps identify. As Twitter notes, “Our work is not done,” before adding, “Our efforts continue to drive meaningful results, including a significant shift in this type of activity off of Twitter.”
