huawei-mate-8-heroFingerprint sensors on smartphones aren’t new, and as many have pointed out, Motorola was one of the first to bring the technology to mobile devices, although safe to say that it never quite took. Only when Apple introduced it in the iPhone 5s that the technology really took off, and we started to see more OEMs adopt it.

However it seems that Samsung wants to set a new standard: iris scanners, and introduced that with the Galaxy Note 7. So far not many companies are biting, but Huawei could be one of them. According to the latest rumors, the upcoming Huawei Mate 9 could be sporting an iris scanner as one of the handset’s security measures.

It is unclear as to how accurate those rumors are, but like we said, we wouldn’t be surprised if other companies were to adopt the technology. Iris scanners are supposed to be more accurate and more secure than fingerprints, although judging from what we know about the Note 7’s scanner, there are some limitations and it isn’t quite as easy or convenient than placing your thumb or finger on the home button.

In any case we guess we’ll have to wait and see if the rumors pan out, but in the meantime what do you guys think? Will iris scanning technology catch on the same way as fingerprint scanners?
