htc-vive-hardware_17Virtual reality isn’t exactly new technology, although in more recent times the technology has certainly progressed very far to the point where it has been adopted by many big name tech companies and commercialized. HTC is one of those companies who have adopted the tech and it looks like things have been progressing relatively well for them.

According to the latest figures, it has been revealed that 140,000 units of the HTC Vive have been sold to date. This is versus the 100,000 or so sold back in August, so for HTC to push another 40,000 units in the span of a couple of months isn’t too shabby, although we guess that HTC would love if the numbers were higher.

That being said, it would seem to pale in comparison to the Sony PlayStation VR. According to the forecasts, Sony is expected to sell a whopping 2.6 million units of the PlayStation VR by the end of the year, so unless HTC manages to push another couple of million in the next two months, it looks like it could be lagging behind the competition despite being on the market longer.

To be fair, out of all the dedicated VR headsets, the HTC Vive is the most expensive. Let’s not forget the fact that users will also need a relatively souped out PC in order to use it, creating another barrier of entry. This is versus the PlayStation VR that only needs a $300 PS4 console to use it.
