BMW is now expanding its ReachNow car sharing service outside of the West Coast. The service was launched in Seattle earlier this year and later arrived in Portland. BMW today announced that an initial fleet of 250 ReachNow cars will be available to users in Brooklyn, New York. The fleet includes models like the Mini Clubman and the BMW 3 Series.

ReachNow will be competing against established car sharing services in New York such as Avis’ Zipcar and Daimler’s Car2Go. These services operate in a similar fashion.

Users will first have to register as members before they are able to locate the cars and book them through an app which shows available cars in areas where the service has gone live. A one-time membership fee of $39 has to be paid while use of the car is charged at $0.49 per minute when driving and $0.30 when parking. When returning the car, users can just park it at any legal parking space and be on their way.

According to BMW, ReachNow cars can be parked at metered spaces within a city’s designated Home Area.” The Home Area for Brooklyn includes Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Sunset Park as well as portions of Borough Park, Crown Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Bushwick.

A couple of pilot programs for ReachNow will also be launched in the coming weeks. The Ride program will let members call a driver or schedule individual and recurring rides. Reserve will let them schedule for a car to be delivered at a time and location convenient for them if they plan on using the car for multi-day trips.
