Earlier this month popular photo and video editing app Prisma announced that they would be allowing users to apply their filters to Facebook Live videos. However it seems that Facebook isn’t too thrilled with the app doing that and has since blocked Prisma’s live video filters from posting to Facebook Live.
According to Prisma, they were told by Facebook, “Your app streams video from a mobile device camera, which can already be done through the Facebook app. The Live Video API is meant to let people publish live video content from other sources such as professional cameras, multi-camera setups, games or screencasts.” However as TechCrunch points out, Facebook Live’s FAQ does not explicitly ban the streaming from smartphone cameras, which is kind of ironic given that Facebook Live is also accessible from its smartphone app.
This has led to some speculation that Facebook simply did not appreciate the competition, especially when they have launched a similar feature themselves. According to Prisma’s Aram Airapetyan, “We were trying to fix the issue but Facebook has a strong policy, they only let broadcast to different cameras, drones. Our app is no drone or camera. So this means we cannot do it.”
However despite this setback, Prisma still has big plans for live, but exactly what that is remains to be seen.
