At least that’s the story we are hearing, according to a report from BuzzFeed in which a certain Michael Guntrum who dropped his iPhone 4 into a freezing lake back in 2015 when he was out ice fishing. He thought that was the end of it. When the lake was drained, a certain Daniel Kalgren went out with a metal detector in hopes of finding buried treasure, only to stumble across Guntrum’s iPhone 4.,
Kalgren kept the phone not knowing who it belonged to and powered it up two days later to find that it could turn on. Kalgren then managed to locate Guntrum’s number and sent him a picture asking if it was his. “I had just been talking about that lake early that day. It was eerie. He sent me a picture and asked, ‘Does this look familiar?’ and I recognized the screensaver.”
The phone was eventually returned to Guntrum who plans to have it repaired and then pass it to his mom to use. Given how it was only with the iPhone 7 that Apple introduced water resistant features, it’s impressive that the iPhone 4 managed to survive this long, and in such extreme temperatures too.
