One of the reasons why Lenovo bought Motorola from Google for $2.9 billion was believed to be the greater brand recognition that Motorola enjoys, particularly in markets outside China where Lenovo certainly needs no introduction. It was since been rumored that perhaps the company will retire its own brand in favor of using Motorola’s for smartphones but that hasn’t happened yet. However, rumors are still coming out of China suggesting that it could happen in the near future.
The rumor suggests that the Lenovo P2 is going to be the last handset to bear Lenovo’s name and that the Chinese giant is going to switch completely to the “Moto” brand for all future smartphones. Basically, what this means is that any and all smartphones that Lenovo makes in the future won’t carry its name on the front.
It would certainly make sense. The average consumer is likely to associate Motorola more with smartphones than Lenovo, which many just know for its PCs. Lenovo hasn’t obviously confirmed anything at this point in time but it’s not like this doesn’t make sense.
We’re likely to get more clarity about this after November 8th when Lenovo is expected to release the P2 alongside the rumored Moto M in China.
