Samsung has been hard at work expanding its mobile payment service to more countries across the globe. If a new report is to be believed, it’s possible that the Samsung Pay India launch might take place next year. The report mentions that Samsung might launch its mobile payments service in India in the first half of 2017.

Samsung Pay is already available in around a dozen countries across the globe, including but not limited to South Korea, Spain, Singapore, Russia, United States, Brazil, Canada, and Australia. Samsung has made no secret of the fact that it wants to expand the service to as many countries as it possibly can.

According to a new report, Samsung has started testing the mobile payment service for launch in India. It’s likely to officially announce the launch in the first half of next year. Even though most retailers in the country won’t have NFC terminals, it won’t really matter since Samsung Pay supports MST technology which enables conventional credit and debit card readers to process mobile payments.

A report out of South Korea recently revealed that Samsung is going to install Samsung Pay by default on most of its mid-range smartphones starting next year. That’s also going to play a major part in increasing the adoption of its mobile payment service in an emerging market like India.

It would be in Samsung’s best interest to launch Samsung Pay in India very soon. The country recently demonetized INR 500 and 1,000 currency denominations, pushing the public towards mobile payment services like Freecharge and Paytm. Samsung can leverage its brand recognition in the country to hit the ground running with Samsung Pay.
