When you think about how far hard drive storage has come since just a few years ago you will truly recognize just how hard these companies work to stay ahead of the competition and continue to raise the bar further. Seagate made news last year with its 10TB hard drive but the company is clearly not stopping there. It has plans to release a massive 16TB hard drive in 2018.

According to a new report, Seagate has a 16TB hard drive in development that it’s pushing to release by next year. Now it’s not like this is a figure that hasn’t been achieved with any storage drive before.

There are solid state drives bigger than 16TB out there. Seagate itself has a 60TB solid state drive but if it’s able to make this happen, it’s going to be the manufacturer of the single largest magnetic disk drive ever created.

A 16TB hard drive will certainly be special but don’t think for a second that it’s going to require special hardware. Seagate mentions that it’s going to be a standard 3.5 inch drive which means that it’s most likely going to work with conventional desktop PCs.

It’s unclear how much Seagate is going to charge for this behemoth but considering that its 10TB hard drive was priced at $534.99, you’re looking at a damage of at least $500.
