Google hasn’t been quick to update the official YouTube app for Android TV. It has actually been over a year since a proper update was launched for this app. Google has finally followed through with one. The update is significant in that it brings a major design refresh for the official YouTube app for Android TV.

The core structure of the app is compliant with Google’s design guidelines for Android TV apps. The app’s navigation drawer is lighter now as the entire list of channel subscriptions and several other options have been removed and relocated elsewhere.

The signed-in account is now displayed at the top so that it’s easier for users to find out which account is signed in. There are now darker shades in the background and white backgrounds are used to highlight selected elements.

Google has also made changes to the search interface as well as the video player. The latter’s big control bar has been removed so more of the video is visible even when the controls are being accessed, this is quite similar to the YouTube app for smartphones.

Several minor tweaks have been made to improve the overall experience. The YouTube for Android TV app version 2.00.16 is out now and should update on compatible Android TV-powered television sets in the near future.
