While there are several third-party apps that can identify songs and TV shows that are playing in front of you right now, having features baked into the operating system itself would be much better and more convenient, and it looks like this is something that Google has finally done with Google Assistant.

Prior to this, Google Search has always been capable of identifying songs around you, but unfortunately when Assistant was launched, the feature was not part of it for whatever reasons. However like we said, a recent update has changed that as it is now being reported that users will be able to ask Assistant to identify songs for them.

We’re not sure why Google only chose to include the feature now, but we should point out that the newly launched Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL phones have the feature as well and will be able to continuously identify songs for the user without them asking for it. Using Assistant will bring up additional details, so perhaps Google was waiting for the release of the Pixel 2 phones before including the feature.

It is unclear how wide this roll out is but hopefully all Android users should be able to see and use the feature.
