Survey Finds Twitter Users Are Divided Over The 280-Character Limit

Last month Twitter rolled out a new feature that expanded the character limit of tweets from 140-characters to 280-characters, effectively doubling the amount of words one could fit in a tweet. It seems like it might have been a good idea, but a recent survey found that Twitter users are divided about the change.

In a survey conducted by YouGov (via Gadgets 360), four in ten users surveyed said that they liked the change, while a third said that they preferred it when tweets were limited to 140-characters, while the remaining users surveyed are still undecided on the change. This is rather interesting because like we said, it seemed like the change was one that many users have been asking for.

According to Twitter when they rolled out the feature, “People in the experiment told us that a higher character limit made them feel more satisfied with how they expressed themselves on Twitter, their ability to find good content, and Twitter overall.” The 140-character limit has been in place for a very, very long time now, so we can imagine that there might be some who prefer the old ways just out of familiarity.

Alternatively some might feel that the longer tweets kind of takes away from the whole point of Twitter, and that it might take longer to read tweets now than before as users might be more inclined to post lengthier tweets, especially with the roll out of the “Threads” feature.
