Marvel’s Black Panther was one of the most highly anticipated movies of this year and even the initial reviews suggested that this movie was going to be a hit. The predictions about this movie doing very well on the opening weekend have proven to be true because the box office figures show that Black Panther has clinched a $235 million opening at 4,020 locations in North America.

The latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe opened with an estimated $235 million over the weekend which includes Monday’s holiday as well. The opening figures are enough to rank Black Panther in second-place on the list of all record openings for Marvel movies.

The movie’s box office figures are more than double the initial predictions that emerged in late January, suggesting that this $200 million movie could bring in $100-$120 million on opening weekend. That itself would have been an impressive opening but this is on another level.

It’s now fifth on the list of movies with the highest openings ever, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens at $248 million, Star Wars: The Last Jedi at $220 million, Jurassic World at $208.8 million, and The Avengers at $207.4 million.

Black Panther has broken Deadpool’s record in the process as well for the largest President’s Day weekend which was previously at $152 million. The numbers will continue to climb as the movie opens in additional markets, ultimately solidifying its status as a hit for Marvel.
