It seems that in the future not only might we have to be worried about robots that can outthink us, but also robots that can outrun us. The folks at Festo have recently taken the wraps off their latest robotic creation which is a spider-like robot that can fold up and transform into a rolling wheel that can chase after us.

Dubbed the BionicWheelBot, this is a robot that is inspired by nature and modeled after the flic-flac spider that has been known to perform cartwheels in order to quickly escape from a predator. With it being able to transform, the BionicWheelBot will be ideal when it comes to navigating a variety of terrain, where in some instances it can use its pincer-like legs to scale over rough terrains, and transform into a wheel when the terrain is smoother and it needs to cover more distance faster.

This is not the first time that we’ve seen robots modeled after animals or insects in real-life. For example some of Boston Dynamic’s robots have been modeled after the cheetah, some have been modeled after cats, while some of the more scary ones have actually been modeled after humans where they are realistic enough to star in their own movies.
