Google’s Pixel handsets can hold their own against many flagship smartphones and while the company has captured customers’ attention in the premium segment of the market, it’s yet to expand this lineup to price-sensitive markets. However, if a new report is to be believed, Google might be developing a mid-range Pixel smartphone that could be affordably priced to capture market share in developing markets across the globe.
The report claims that Google is developing a mid-range Pixel smartphone which it’s going to release by July or August in markets like India. The launch will be positioned ahead of the October refresh of the flagship Pixel handsets.
What the report does say is how Google plans on making the Pixel more affordable, so it’s unclear what changes might be made to the design and the handset’s specifications to shave off a couple of hundred dollars from the price.
In India’s case, the company might also go for domestic production of this mid-range smartphone so as to avoid taking a hit on the country’s import taxes on electronic devices. This will enable Google to price the handset more aggressively.
None of this has been officially confirmed at this point in time, though, so take it all with a grain of salt. There’s not much circumstantial evidence available right now to support the theory that a mid-range Pixel is in the pipeline.
The report also adds that Google is going to bring its smart home devices to India as well, the company is expected to start selling the Google Home and Google Home Mini in the country soon.
