Google Workspace has officially launched a structural update for Gemini in Google Docs, enabling the artificial intelligence assistant to read, analyze, and act directly upon comment threads created by collaborators.

Rather than merely generating text from scratch or rewriting isolated passages, Gemini now functions as an active editing assistant by processing a document’s full feedback ecosystem, identifying outstanding project issues, drafting responses to teammates, and applying direct text modifications based on margin notes left by reviewers.

The updated integration enhances user workflow across four primary functional areas:

  • Comment Summarization and Q&A: The system synthesizes dozens of open discussion threads to extract core themes, compile action items, or summarize feedback left by specific team reviewers.
  • Active Note Insertion: Acting as a copy editor, the AI inserts comments throughout the document upon request or tags specific team members for mandatory data verification.
  • Contextual Draft Responses: The assistant generates targeted replies within open threads and searches Google Drive to attach relevant files, such as presentations or spreadsheets, as direct contextual references.
  • Direct Editing Suggestions: Based on feedback provided by reviewers, Gemini rewrites paragraphs or entire sections of the text to fulfill specified editorial requirements.

To maintain strict editorial control, the functionality operates with mandatory user oversight. Gemini does not publish comments or execute permanent text modifications autonomously; instead, it generates draft suggestions and visual markups that users must review and approve manually with a single click.

Furthermore, Google Docs now incorporates proactive AI interventions. Upon opening a lengthy file containing multiple unresolved discussions, the platform offers automatic feedback summaries or suggests reply drafts when selecting an active conversation thread. Utilizing these capabilities requires full edit permissions on the file and active Workspace smart features configured in the administrative console.

The deployment has begun via a gradual rollout scheduled to reach all eligible domains within 15 days. The update is available for Google Workspace business and educational subscribers (Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Standard/Plus, and Education Plus), alongside AI Expanded Access members and individual Google AI Pro and Ultra plan subscribers.
