You may have noticed that a lot of smartphones these days offer a portrait mode. It involves some software trickery to ensure that the person stays in focus while applying a soft blur to the background. You can now achieve a similar result with the Instagram app provided you own select devices that are compatible with this feature. Instagram has announced its own portrait mode called Focus today.

The new Focus mode can be found next to Superzoom under the record button in the Instagram app. As soon as there’s someone in the shot, the feature will automatically spring into action and you’ll notice that the person will stay in focus while the background is softly blurred. This makes the person stand out in a “striking way,” according to Instagram.

The mode can be used for both photos and videos. Once you’re done, you can also add filters, stickers, and text to the photo or video before posting it on Instagram or sending it to friends through Instagram Direct.

Instagram says that the Focus feature is supported by the iPhone SE, iPhone 6S/6S+, iPhone 7/7+, iPhone 8/8+, and the iPhone. It’s also supported by “select Android devices” but they haven’t been detailed by Instagram yet.
