Snapchat may be Facebook’s competitor but that has not stopped Facebook from “borrowing” certain features from the app. For example Instagram’s Stories are a great example of how Facebook borrowed from Snapchat, and now it looks like Facebook is doing it again by redesigning its Nearby Friends feature where it now looks similar to Snap Map.

Note that this is not publicly available yet, at least not to all users, but Facebook has confirmed with TechCrunch that they are currently testing out its redesign. Whether or not it will be successfully implemented remains to be seen, but at the same time a redesign couldn’t hurt given how the feature is rather underused.

If you’re learning about Nearby Friends for the first time, we can’t say we blame you. The feature basically shows you where your Facebook friends are on a map assuming that they’ve turned it on. Given how this seems like an invasion of privacy, not to mention potentially creepy, it is understandable that not many have chosen to turn it on.

However could a redesign help make it more popular? It seems unlikely since at its core it still does the same thing, and following Facebook’s recent privacy scandals, we’re sure that even less people would be inclined to use it, but hey, we could be wrong.
