There are many mid-range smartphones that come with MediaTek processors and the company today announced the launch of new silicon to further improve those devices. The Helio P70 is a successor to the P60 and offers minor upgrades compared to its predecessor. The company is squarely focusing on the artificial intelligence-related improvements that this new chip brings.

The octacore CPU configuration includes 4 ARM Cortex-A73 and a similar number of Cortex-A53 cores with 2MB L2 cache. It supports up to 8GB of LPDDR4x memory and eMMC 5.1 or UFS 2.1 storage. The ARM Mali-GPU MP3 is present as well to power the graphics. 24+16 megapixel dual or 32 megapixel single camera support is present too.

It has a multi-core APU operating at up to 525MHz for artificial intelligence processing as well. The company says that this SoC’s AI engine provides a 10 to 30 percent AI processing boost compared to its predecessor.

It will power new camera experiences as well such as real-time beautification, scene detection, and AR. There’s support for deep-learning facial detection with a claimed accuracy of up to 90 percent.

MediaTek has begun volume production of the Helio P70. The company expects that consumer devices powered by this new chip should be available in the market by next month.
