5G has yet to fully roll out, but at the speed carriers are moving, 5G is expected to be available in some form later this year, and should be spreading across to more markets in 2019. However the only problem is that we will need a 5G compatible smartphone in order to take advantage of the new speeds.

The good news is that OnePlus has plans to launch a 5G smartphone in 2019, and that they will be one of the first few smartphone makers to do so. This was revealed and confirmed by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei where he went on stage during Qualcomm’s recent presentation where he talked about how OnePlus had already conducted 5G tests at Qualcomm’s headquarters a few months ago.

That being said, it is unclear as to which OnePlus smartphone will be getting the 5G tech. The company is expected to launch the OnePlus 7 in 2019, and the OnePlus 7T in the later part of 2019, which means that it’s pretty much a toss up between either of these devices. OnePlus is not alone in their 5G plans as Huawei had also previously confirmed that they will be releasing a 5G smartphone in 2019.

Either way we’ll have to wait and see, but if you’re looking to futureproof yourself, maybe holding off on a new smartphone purchase this year might not be such a bad idea if you want a 5G compatible device.
