Elon Musk has a company that digs tunnels and it’s aptly called The Boring Company. It has been building a tunnel in Los Angeles which is 2 miles long and is located under the streets of Hawthorne where SpaceX, another one of Musk’s companies, is headquartered. A proper transit tunnel is also planned for Chicago.

The tunnels are a vital part of a transportation system that Musk is promoting in which vehicles and people pods will move on electrically powered skates. The high-speed skates would cover immense distances quickly.

A partnership between Chicago and The Boring Company was announced earlier this year. The latter will be building an underground transit link between downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport. Two tunnels will be dug which will connect the transit station underneath the Block 37 stop of the Chicago Loop system.

That station is currently unfinished. Passengers will be able to travel in pods that carry up to 16 people at a time. The pods will depart each destination every 30 seconds and will travel at 150 miles per hour, completing the journey that normally takes 40 minutes in just 12 minutes.

The tunnel that has been dug in Los Angeles is more of a test bed. It will be launched with an opening party on December 10th with free rides being offered the following day.
