Nothing irks users more than receiving notifications that they haven’t signed up for on their smartphones. Some iPhone users were taken aback when they received an unwanted push notification from Apple. The company send the notification to promote its Carpool Karaoke series even though its Apple TV app doesn’t explicitly ask for permission to send push notifications.

Furthermore, Apple’s own App Store guidelines tell developers that their apps must not send unsolicited promotions to users. It’s not clear how many iPhone owners have received this notification but it seems that Apple has sent them twice over the past couple of weeks. Reports about the very first notification are from December 7th and the most recent on December 14th.

Many users were understandably frustrated by this behavior. They took to social media in order to express this frustration. It apparently sent notifications to even those who have the Apple TV app installed but have never watched the Carpool Karaoke series.

While it’s understandable that Apple would want to promote a show that it has invested significantly in, this isn’t something that will be appreciated by its users. The company has not addressed the matter as yet so there’s no comment from Apple regarding the reason behind sending a notification en masse.
