Google today announced a significant expansion of its U.S. operations. The company is opening up a new campus in New York. Google confirmed today that the campus will be at Hudson Square in New York. It’s making a $1 billion commitment for this new space. It will span over 1.7 million square feet as the company has inked lease agreements at 315 and 345 Hudson Street as well as signed a letter of intent at 550 Washington Street.

New York City is where Google set up its first office outside California almost twenty years ago. Its presence in the state has continued to grow since them. It now employs more than 7,000 people that work across a diverse range of products including YouTube, Maps, Search, Ads, and more.

Google says that it plans to start moving into the two Hudson Street buildings by 2020 and in 550 Washington Street in 2022 once that building is complete. Google Hudson Square will thus become the primary location for its New York-based Global Business Organization.

The company says that this $1 billion investment will provide it with the capacity to more than double the number of Googlers in New York over the next ten years. Its announcement follows the recent confirmation from Apple that it’s opening up a new $1 billion campus in Austin.
