Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro is one powerful handset based on our reviews, and a recent blind smartphone camera test saw it beat out the competition which included Apple’s iPhones. So the question is, with all these accolades and power under the hood, will it beat the iPhone Xs Max in a speed test?

For those who don’t have time to watch the video above, the answer is no. In a speed test video uploaded by PhoneBuff, it shows the Mate 20 Pro going up against the iPhone Xs Max to determine which phone is faster. For the most part, the Mate 20 Pro held its own during the first round of tests where it was only an app or two behind.

However the iPhone Xs Max completed the first round in 1 minute 47.71 seconds, while the Mate 20 Pro ended up taking about 5 seconds longer and completing the first round in 1 minute 52.7 seconds. Now in the second round which pretty much tests the RAM of the phones and see whether they can keep apps in memory, you would think that the Mate 20 Pro with double the RAM of the iPhone would be the obvious winner, but that wasn’t the case.

The iPhone Xs Max took 35.17 seconds to complete the second round, while the Mate 20 Pro took 48.2 seconds. Based on these tests, it seems like the iPhone Xs Max will continue to remain the king of speed tests for 2018, handily beating out other devices like the OnePlus 6T and the Galaxy Note 9. Perhaps 2019’s smartphones with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 might do better, but we’ll have to wait and see.
