Google first announced late last year that it would sunset the standalone YouTube Gaming app in 2019. Since the company had decided to move the features of the app, it didn’t make any sense to keep the standalone version around for much longer. The company had initially said that the shutdown would take place in March but it has now confirmed that the app will be removed on May 30th.

YouTube Gaming was launched in 2015 in order to compete with the rising popularity of Twitch. YouTube was one of the best platforms for gaming content before the likes of Twitch became popular so at that point in time it did make sense to have a standalone service.

Its popularity has gone down since then which convinced Google that it was no longer necessary to keep a standalone app. The company decided to migrate the app’s features to its main YouTube app under a separate Gaming section. Viewers can find popular uploads, live streams, and other gaming-related content in this dedicated section.

YouTube Gaming users only have a few days now before the app bites the dust for good. That’s when they will be forced to access the features in the main app’s gaming section. The dedicated section can also be accessed on desktop at youtube.com/gaming.
