One of the biggest sins that anyone can commit in the academic world is to plagiarize. This can come in many forms, such as copying text directly, or not citing a source properly. Students have been known to fail certain courses/classes due to plagiarism, which is a waste of everyone’s time and money.

However, Google wants to help with that and with the announcement of its new education platform “Assignments”, Google will be offering students and educators an originality report tool that will help them check their assignments to see if there might be sections that might be plagiarized or not cited properly.

According to Google, “This new feature—with several reports included free in every course—will be part of Classroom and Assignments, which was also announced today. We create originality reports by scanning student work for matched phrases across hundreds of billions of web pages and tens of millions of books.”

Google also notes that soon, schools will also be able to build up their own private repository of student submissions, meaning that they’ll be able to check against past students work for originality. The concept of originality reports aren’t new and there are plenty of similar tools already available to students and educators, but if you’re interested in checking out Google’s own take on it, head on over to its Assignments website for the details.
