It used to be that messages you sent were pretty much permanent, but the trend we’re seeing in the past few years are messages that can be unsent or sent temporarily before they self-destruct. For those who use Instagram or Facebook Messenger, you’ll be pleased to learn that those features are now available for you.

While unsending messages on Messenger and Instagram aren’t new, Facebook is now introducing the ability for messages sent to vanish. However, this isn’t like Snapchat where messages disappear after a set period of time. Instead, this is a different chat mode where messages sent in that particular mode will disappear when closed.

This means that users can create completely secret chats where they will enter “Vanish Mode”, and when done, they can close it and return to the regular chat. According to Facebook, “We designed vanish mode with safety and choice in mind, so you control your experience. Only people you’re connected to can use vanish mode with you in a chat. Vanish mode is also opt-in, so you choose whether to enter vanish mode with someone. If someone takes a screenshot of your chat while you’re using vanish mode, you’ll be notified.”

This new feature is on the heels of Facebook introducing disappearing messages to WhatsApp. It’s slightly different to vanishing mode, but it’s pretty much the same concept revolving around self-destructing messages that leave no trace.
