In terms of flexible display technology, we know that displays that can be rolled up exist. In fact, LG started to sell its rollable TV this year, so we do know that such displays do exist and are possible to create, but what about putting such a display inside of a smartphone? That’s something that Oppo is looking into.

In fact, the company has shown off a concept device called the Oppo X 2021 that features a rollable display that allows a phone to transform from its smartphone form factor into a tablet-like device. It features a 6.7-inch display that when expanded, goes up to 7.4-inches, putting it into the mini tablet category.

It actually looks really cool, but unfortunately, this is a concept for now and Oppo will not be selling the device, at least not for now. Perhaps the company is looking to gauge the public for feedback to decide if they should proceed with such a phone, but for now, we’ll just have to imagine what it would be like to own such a device.

With the phone, Oppo claims that there are mechanisms designed to help reduce the stress placed on the display and to spread it out. This is versus foldable phones where the majority of the stress is on the hinge. Will these types of devices do better than foldable phones? We guess we’ll have to wait and see.
