One of the newer features that YouTube had introduced to its platform was the ability for creators to add chapters to their videos. This helped longer form videos where creators can break down their videos into different chapters so that users can easily and quickly skip to the section that they want.

However, the onus was always on the creator to add these chapters themselves, which meant that not all videos had these chapters. The good news for creators and viewers of YouTube is that according to 9to5Google, they have discovered that YouTube is looking to test out AI-generated video chapters.

This means that creators won’t need to manually add timestamps as the AI can help them determine when and where these chapters should be placed. “We want to make it easier for people to navigate videos with video chapters, so we are experimenting with automatically adding video chapters (so creators don’t have to manually add timestamps). We’ll use machine learning to recognize text in order to auto generate video chapters. We’re testing this out with a small group of videos.”

Given that these are videos and not walls of text, it will be interesting to see if YouTube’s AI is smart enough to detect changes in topic and if it can apply these chapters correctly. If it does, then it will help save creators a lot of time while adding value to their videos.
