Right now, a lot of laptop chargers, like the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, are huge bricks that are heavy and quite troublesome to bring around. However, that’s due to the limitations of existing technology, but the good news for MacBook owners is that Apple could soon switch to much smaller chargers.

This is according to a report from DigiTimes who claims that Apple could be looking to make the switch to GaN chargers. This could ultimately result in chargers that are smaller, lighter, and generate less heat compared to current chargers.

For those who are unfamiliar, more traditional chargers and charging bricks are made using silicon components. This is because silicon, for the longest time, has been a better conductor of electricity compared to previously used materials, plus it is also cheaper. However, there are limitations to it, which is why for the most part, a lot of laptop charging bricks have been kind of huge.

However, GaN chargers, which are starting to grow in popularity, adopt a newer technology that is more efficient than silicon in conducting electricity. It allows for electricity to pass through faster, and it also doesn’t get quite as hot compared to silicon. This could result in a charger for a laptop like the MacBook to become small enough to fit into your pocket. There is no word on when Apple will release these chargers, so take it with a grain of salt for now.
