With the launch of the new iPad Pro, Apple introduced mini LED display technology to the tablet. It is also the first time we’re seeing the use of mini LEDs in any of Apple’s products, and we expect that Apple will eventually bring it to other devices. In fact, it has been rumored that the 2021 MacBook Pro refresh could actually see the use of mini LED displays.

Unfortunately, if you were looking forward to the upgrade, prepare to be disappointed. This is because a report from DigiTimes (paywall) has revealed that Apple’s mini LED MacBooks might be delayed to 2022. We’re not sure why the use of mini LEDs might have been postponed, but MacRumors speculates that it might be linked to a report from earlier this year that said that Apple delayed the launch of the laptops, originally intended for a May/June launch, to later in the year.

However, the launch of the laptops later in the year makes sense as the last time Apple introduced a refresh to its MacBook lineup was in the later part of 2020 where they gave the 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air the new M1 chipset. Apple has also been rumored to be giving the MacBook Pro a design refresh, so it would be disappointing if the brand new laptop were to skip mini LEDs until 2022.
