Using your phone to hotspot your tablet or laptop in public might actually be safer than connecting to a public WiFi network, but that doesn’t mean that your hotspot is secure. This is because for iOS hotspots, Apple uses WPA2 security which isn’t weak by any means, but it is rather outdated.

However, the good news is that with iOS 15, Apple will actually switch over to the use of WPA3. It should be noted that Apple’s products have been able to connect to WPA3 networks since it was introduced, but when it comes to hotspots, for whatever reason, Apple chose to use WPA2, but that will change in iOS 15.

WPA3 was actually introduced back in 2018 by the WiFi Alliance, the first major upgrade since 2004 which means that it is most definitely due for an upgrade. That being said, the general experience should be more or less the same. The changes here are made under the hood where WPA3 is better for those who might choose to use weaker passwords.

Ideally you should use stronger passwords, but we get it, it can be a pain to remember. So if you insist on using weaker passwords, then WPA3 will have added security that will make it harder for attackers to use dictionary-based attacks in an attempt to guess it.
