For the past few years, we’ve seen companies develop foldable phones. The concept has yet to fully catch on, but it’s slowly getting there. However, earlier this year LG teased that they would be launching a rollable phone, which is basically a smartphone with a display that can be rolled up instead of folded.

Given that LG already showed off a rollable TV concept, it didn’t seem entirely out of the question. Now it looks like Huawei could be next to hop on board that bandwagon. According to a report from LetsGoDigital, they have discovered a patent by Huawei that suggests that the company could be interested in the rollable concept.

The patent seems to suggest that the company is toying with the idea of creating their own rollable phone that can be pulled outwards to extend the display. The patent mentions a rolling mechanism that relies on magnets, so what you would do is pull the screen taut to help roll/stretch it out. The patent mentions that it could go from 6.5-inches when it’s “closed” to as big as 11-inches.

That being said, as this is a patent it’s hard to say if Huawei will make this a reality. However, now that LG has exited the smartphone market and taken their rollable phone with them, we’re not sure when will be the next time we can look forward to it.
