Facebook started out as a social networking platform but over the years, the company started to expand its offerings. It acquired companies like WhatsApp and Instagram, and also dove into hardware with devices like the Portal. Now according to a report from The Verge, the company could be considering a rebranding.

According to the publication’s sources, Facebook is apparently planning to announce a new company name next week that will better reflect its focus on building the metaverse. Apparently this is part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to help the company be known for more than just a social media platform.

If this sounds familiar, it is because Facebook isn’t alone in rebranding itself. Several years ago, Google underwent a similar transformation where parent company Alphabet was formed and Google became one of its subsidiaries. Facebook the social media platform won’t be going anywhere, but we imagine that it could undergo a similar transition where a new parent company would be formed and Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Oculus, and more would be under it.

Given how synonymous Facebook has become with privacy related scandals in recent years, we imagine that it might be hard to launch new ventures under the Facebook brand without people raising concerns, so a new parent company could potentially help with that.
