Additionally, it offers multilingual speech generation, enabling the creation of natural-sounding voices for virtual assistants and non-player characters in the metaverse. Voicebox also aims to assist the visually impaired by providing AI-driven voices that can read written messages in the voices of their friends.

However, the excitement surrounding Voicebox is overshadowed by concerns about its potential for misuse. Meta’s developers are fully aware of the possible harm that could arise from its release, leading them to prioritize responsibility over openness. In a statement, Meta researchers acknowledged the delicate balance required when sharing AI advancements, emphasizing the need to safeguard against unintended consequences.

Voicebox operates on the premise that even a brief two-second audio sample of someone’s voice can be used to generate synthetic speech that closely resembles their natural voice. This opens up possibilities for malicious actors to manipulate the technology for criminal, political, or personal purposes.

The potential havoc that scammers could wreak by convincingly impersonating loved ones (we saw something like that happening a few days ago) or employers are deeply troubling, as it undermines trust and exploits the vulnerability of unsuspecting individuals.

While Meta has published a detailed paper on Voicebox, offering insights into its inner workings and potential mitigation strategies, their decision not to release the technology reflects their caution regarding its potential ramifications. The company aims to encourage collaboration and further research in the audio domain but acknowledges the uncertain and apprehensive sentiments surrounding such advancements.
