Google is preparing a new Chrome update for iOS that makes it easier for iPhone and iPad users to switch from Safari without needing a computer. The feature focuses on helping users transfer key information stored in Safari directly into Chrome, reducing the effort usually involved in changing browsers.

With the new tool, users will be able to import bookmarks, browsing history, and saved passwords from Safari into Chrome. According to reports, the feature has been spotted in Chrome 145 Beta for iOS and is expected to become widely available once the stable version is released.

Because Apple enforces strict privacy protections on iOS, Chrome cannot automatically access Safari data in the background. Instead, Google is offering a guided import process that users complete manually on their device. While this adds an extra step, it ensures that Safari information remains protected and only transfers with explicit user permission.

The process begins inside the iPhone Settings app, where users can export Safari browsing data. iOS generates a ZIP file containing the selected information, which can be saved to iCloud Drive in the Downloads folder. After that, Chrome provides an import section in its own Settings menu, allowing users to select the ZIP file and review what will be transferred. Once confirmed, Chrome imports the data into the browser.

Google also recommends deleting the ZIP file immediately after finishing the transfer. Since it includes sensitive personal information, such as saved credentials, keeping the file stored on the device or cloud could increase security risks if it is accessed by someone else.

This update is expected to benefit users who have considered switching to Chrome but avoided doing so because moving information was inconvenient. Previously, importing browser data often required extra tools or using a desktop computer, making the transition less practical for many people.

By supporting a complete import process directly on iPhone, Chrome reduces friction for Safari users and creates a more seamless experience for those who want to move between browsers. Overall, the feature offers a more straightforward way to migrate browsing data while still working within Apple’s privacy restrictions.
