WhatsApp has announced the rollout of a new feature designed to help families monitor and manage how children interact with digital communication. The platform is introducing supervised accounts specifically for pre-teens, providing parents and guardians with direct oversight of their children’s messaging activities.
Enhanced Safety and Oversight
This initiative is part of Meta’s broader strategy to enhance safety for younger users and prevent unauthorized exposure to unknown group chats or harmful content. Through these parental controls, guardians can configure specific security and communication profiles for the minor’s account.
According to an official statement on the WhatsApp blog, the setup process requires the guardian’s device and the child’s device to be physically present together to link the accounts. Once the connection is established, guardians gain the authority to:
-
Approve or block contact requests from unknown numbers.
-
Manage which groups the child is permitted to join.
-
Control general privacy settings for the account.
Privacy and Implementation
Despite the increased level of supervision, WhatsApp emphasizes that the core privacy of the communications remains intact. All messages continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring that neither Meta nor any third party can access the content of the conversations. The parental controls focus on managing who the child communicates with rather than monitoring the specific text of their private messages.
This feature is being released gradually across different regions. By implementing these tools, WhatsApp aims to provide a more secure environment for younger users while giving parents the necessary utilities to guide their children’s first experiences with instant messaging.
