Google has announced a new feature for Google Wallet designed to streamline online purchases made via desktop computers. The cross-device payment verification system replaces traditional SMS-based security codes with a direct smartphone notification.
Instead of waiting for and manually entering a text message code, users can confirm a transaction by authenticating their identity directly on their mobile device using fingerprint scanning, facial recognition, or a standard screen lock pattern.
Industry experts note that this biometric approach offers enhanced security compared to text message verification. SMS-based codes are increasingly vulnerable to SIM-swap attacks, a fraudulent technique where bad actors seize control of a victim’s phone number to intercept incoming messages. By requiring physical, biometric authentication tied to the specific hardware of the user’s smartphone, this update mitigates the risk of remote interception.
This development places Google Pay ahead of its main competitors in the digital wallet sector. Apple Pay still relies on conventional web-purchase verification methods, which typically involve SMS codes or redirection to a secondary banking application. Similarly, Samsung Wallet has not implemented an equivalent device-linked security key system.
Alongside the authentication upgrade, Google Wallet is receiving a visual overhaul. The interface now displays favorited payment cards directly on the device lock screen and prioritizes time-sensitive digital passes.
Short-term documents, such as airline boarding passes, will appear in a prominent, full-screen format featuring live itinerary updates. Additionally, a dedicated search button has been integrated into the layout to help users locate specific historical transactions saved to their accounts.
The upcoming security and interface features were initially revealed during the company’s recent developer conference. While Google has detailed the functionality and design changes of the wallet update, the manufacturer has not yet finalized or announced a definitive global release date for the public rollout.
