Ahead of Computex 2026, ASUS has officially unveiled the ROG Ally X20. This new handheld console introduces a significant display upgrade, replacing the previous 7-inch IPS panel with a 7.4-inch OLED screen. The new display maintains a 1080p resolution while offering a variable refresh rate ranging from 30 Hz to 120 Hz. Additionally, the screen features 600 nits of SDR brightness, peaks at 1,400 nits in HDR, supports Dolby Vision, and holds a VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 1000 certification.

Under the hood, the device retains the AMD Z2 Extreme processor, paired with 24 GB of RAM operating at 8,000 MT/s and 1 TB of internal storage. Hardware adjustments include drift-resistant GuliKit TMR joysticks and a versatile D-pad capable of switching between 4-way and 8-way directional modes. To accommodate these enhancements, the chassis is 9 mm wider, 0.5 mm thicker, and 41 grams heavier than its predecessor. ASUS has also redesigned the cooling fans to optimize airflow and lower screen temperatures during extended gaming sessions.

Ergonomic and layout improvements are prominent in this generation. The heavily criticized game library button has been replaced with a multi-functional action button that captures screenshots with a single click and records video when held down. Furthermore, the ABXY buttons now sit flush with the chassis when pressed, the bumpers offer a longer and quieter travel distance, and the XBOX button features green backlighting. The microSD slot has also been upgraded to the Express standard.

Despite these premium hardware updates, according to The Verge, the initial sales strategy may frustrate US consumers because, at launch, the ROG Ally X20 will not be sold as a standalone unit. Instead, it will be available exclusively as part of a product bundle with the Xreal R1 augmented reality glasses. While the standalone Xreal R1 glasses retail for $849, ASUS has not yet disclosed the final price for the complete hardware bundle.
