Google has commenced testing a redesigned user interface for YouTube Music, focusing heavily on implementing full-screen album art during active playback.
As noticed by Android Authority, this visual update aims to modernize the platform’s aesthetics, allowing it to compete more effectively with rival services like Spotify while offering users a significantly more immersive streaming experience.

YouTube Music’s new design shows album art in full screen
According to recent leaks and internal test reports, Google is exploring subtle but impactful changes to the platform’s default layout. The core modification centers on the presentation of the “Now Playing” screen:
- Full-Screen Expansion: Instead of displaying the album cover as a traditional, centralized square, the artwork will expand to cover the entire background of the screen.
- Modern Aesthetic: This design choice aligns with contemporary software UI trends, reducing blank margins and utilizing the artwork to dictate the overall color palette of the player interface.
This experimental update is currently in a limited testing phase. It has not yet been widely released to the public, nor is it available across all operating systems and devices.

YouTube Music’s previous design
This visual overhaul follows a series of recent adjustments Google has introduced to enhance the user experience on YouTube Music. Recent platform updates include a relocated search bar now positioned at the bottom of the screen, as well as highly optimized playlist sorting filters to streamline library management.
Furthermore, the platform maintains key functional incentives to secure its market position. Subscribers still benefit from the ability to upload up to 100,000 personal audio tracks directly to the cloud and access seamless integration via YouTube Premium bundles. Google has also incorporated the streaming service into its search-centric AI features and continues to develop native offline playback support for the Apple Watch, reflecting its ongoing commitment to cross-device compatibility.
